Grandparents Day is celebrated each year in September. Grandparents are a source of emanating boundless and unconditional love towards their children and grandchildren. This special day is not a commercial day that helps people sell flowers and cards. It has a history, meaning and purpose.
It was initiated at the grassroots level by West Virginian Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, with the behind-the-scenes support of her husband Joseph L. McQuade. They had 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. After being married for over 60 years, Mr. McQuade passed away in 2001. Mrs. McQuade passed away in 2008.
There are three purposes to celebrate Grandparents Day:
- To honor grandparents.
- To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children.
- To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.
Grandparents are the backbone of a every family. They are a living legacy of a family’s history.
So make them feel special and loved on a day dedicated to them.
How to make this Grandparents Day special
Plant a tree.
Instead of gifting them flowers, plant a tree and give it their name. Put a name tag on the tree guard and mention the date and occasion.
This gift will remain forever and in fact as it will grow, it will remind them of their Grandchild’s love!
And as a bonus you will contribute to the environment and pass on a very important message to your child.
Cook a special meal.
Near or far, grandparents are going to love the fact that their grandchild cooked something for them. So bake a cake or make a traditional dish of your family with your child, lots of love and blessings from the grandparents are guaranteed!
Make a Scrapbook.
Reliving memories is what Grandparents love to do. And if they come in a physical form of a scrapbook, be sure that they will be overwhelmed with love and joy!
So make a scrap book with your child, note down all the songs they used to sing, stories they used to tell and put up all the special photos.
A little effort will make them cherish their gift for all their life!
Record a song.
Find out their favourite song and make your child sing it. Dress him/her up according to the song, if possible.
Do a proper recording and send it to them. And if you live together, arrange for a proper screening where everyone sits together and watches it.
Trust me, they are going to love it!
Offer community service.
Feed the poor, spend time at an old age home, provide some essentials. There are so many people in need and so much to do when it comes to community service.
Choose this special day and make grandparents feel proud of you!
Make this day as special as you can. Our future generations depend on us for values and morals. It is what we teach them today, will come back to us tomorrow.
So the best investment that we can make is in imparting the right values!
Happy Grandparents Day!
